Well-Known Causes Of Diabetes

By Jacob Waeetane

The thought of diabetes creeps most people out, not because it is a contagious disease, which it isn't, but because of the fact that it's quite a serious medical condition.

Diabetes mellitus, abbreviated as DM, is a set of related diseases in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar, more specifically the glucose in the blood. This occurrence brings about many changes in normal body functioning and this includes the following.

There are a number of symptoms of diabetes, but firstly, there's fatigue. In diabetes, the body is no longer capable of utilizing glucose for energy and begins to metabolize fat which requires additional energy to pull off which leads to fatigue.

Also another symptom is unexplained loss of weight due to inability to properly process the calories in the food they eat. Another reason is that diabetic individuals also release much sugar and water through constant urination. All these add up and result to losing weight even with excessive eating.

Also a very well-known sign is polydipsia or extreme thirst. This occurs because of the increase in sugar content of the blood that prompts the brain to trigger the body to dilute the blood to lower the sugar level by drinking more water. Also related to this symptom is the increase in the amount of urine excreted.

So it just appropriate to now talk about polyuria or excessive urination. This arises due to the body's effort to eliminate the sugar in the blood.

Polyphagia or excessive eating is another sign that's experienced by people with DM. This happens due to increased insulin levels that trigger the body to take in more food.

One more very evident sign of DM is poor wound healing. The high blood sugar level affects the proper functioning of the white blood cells which protect the body against bacteria. Thus, without them functioning properly, poor wound healing occurs that could even lead to wound infection.

Last symptom you should know of is related to the mentation of the person of diabetes. When sugar levels reach extreme heights, the mental status of the person becomes affected. The evident signs of this change are agitation, unexplained irritability, inattention, extreme lethargy and confusion.

All of these symptoms are brought about by so many diabetes causes. These include a genetic inclination, the environment, lifestyle or a medical condition that has paved the way for diabetes to emerge.
