Understanding Diabetes

By Ronny Pratteroll

Health professionals are now concerned of the growing number of people with diabetes. Even children already exhibit symptoms of diabetes. Because of this the government and other concerned sectors are now pooling efforts to spread more information about the condition.

The center of the problem in diabetes is blood sugar. There are two mechanisms when diabetes occurs. First, is when the body fails to produce insulin which is tasked to regulate blood sugar levels. In the other case, the body can produce insulin but the cells are not able to properly react to it. this causes the failure of the body to convert sugar into energy thus causing blood sugar levels to increase.

With higher blood sugar levels, the body experiences a lot of problems. Symptoms include cuts that are slow to heal, failing vision and fatigue. If left untreated, patients may have to be amputated or could lose their vision.

There is no clear explanation as to how is diabetes caused. Some believe that it's linked to diet and lifestyle but in most cases bad diet and unhealthy lifestyles are only triggers or aggravating factors. The cause is more on the physiology of a person. Some studies even show that diabetes is hereditary.

But whatever the exact cause is, what's essential is being able to prevent or treat it. The following are some of the things that can be done to control the condition:

1. Exercise-researches found that exercise is a good way to control blood sugar levels. One thing's for sure, it really helps manage your weight. For those who are at high risk, exercise can really help prevent you from having diabetes. It is not just good for diabetes but for your health in general.

2. Eat healthy-fiber and whole grain are two great foods that are helpful to those who have diabetes. This may be because of its effect in your metabolism.

3. Have the right attitude-a positive attitude will really do a lot. It does not only make your feel better, it helps produce hormones that promote faster recovery from diseases.

If you feel that you exhibit symptoms of diabetes, head to your doctor right away for proper treatment.
