Male obesity in UK could reach 50% by 2040

By George L. Hooper

Obesity in the UK has been a rising problem for over a decade now, and the latest prediction from experts, that 50% of the male population will be obese by 2040, is a harsh but true reality. The experts' shocking warning comes from worries about the current eating trends of young British males getting increasingly worse over the last decade.

In the last decade, obesity in UK males aged between 18 and 40 has doubled, from 10% in 1993 to 20% today. And if this figure is allowed to continue rising in the way it is, the expected figures for 2030 are a staggering 40%, and a chilling 50% by 2040.

The experts also expressed worries that the rise in obesity will ensue a rise in weight related health issues including heart disease, diabetes and cancer, costing the NHS a staggering 320 billion if it the prediction becomes a reality.

Experts have stressed how instilling better eating habits into the younger generations from an early age, including better food labelling, advertising and healthier food available in schools, could play a vital role in curbing obesity and turning those predictions around. They reiterate that habits created in schools have an impact on both the children's future and the family unit as a whole.

They also highlight that despite the fact that investment in better school meals will come at great cost to the education system, its benefits will be endless in the future, and should be seen as a sensible investment.
