Gestation Diabetes in women

By Terry Brennar

Gestation Diabetes is a medical condition that may have a number of side effects to women who suffer from it that may be risky. This should not be a reason for you to be scared but there are a couple of recent news that you should be aware of. One of them was from the Nigerian tribune.

Diabetes Causes Abortions In Pregnant Women

There is no other experience that can be as devastating to a woman as a miscarriage or spontaneous abortion. A number of experts think that in some instances diabetes may be the cause of many cases of abortion and birth of children with inborn malformations in pregnant women.

Mrs Sarah Haruna suffered a total of four miscarriages in a span of eight years and despite the fact that she had sought medical help from two private hospitals during her last two pregnancies, she still went through painful miscarriages since the cause had not been identified. It took the efforts of one government hospital to discover the problem and finally Haruna delivered a healthy baby after being monitored by a specialist for about seven months.

As we have seen from this story, it is very important for a woman to get a first, second and third opinion once they start seeing any symptoms of Gestation Diabetes so that they can make sure their health and that of their children is safe. This is an important thing to do since it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Megha Satyanarayana of Detroit Free Press writes:

In what was termed as the largest medical malpractice jury verdict in Michigan history, an Oakland County jury awarded the family of quadriplegic 15-year-old girl $130 million in damages.

Attorneys for MarkellVanSlembrouck of Macomb Township said the girl was larger than expected at birth because of Gestational Diabetes in her mother, Kimberly VanSlembrouck. Rather than deliver by cesarean section, Dr. Andrew Halperin induced VanSlembrouck for a vaginal delivery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, said attorney Geoffrey Fieger. Fieger said Markell received brain damage and a broken clavicle and now has quadriplegia, requiring around-the-clock care.

According to Fieger, the doctor literally crushed the life out of the little girl. The officials of the hospital said that their evidence revealed the girl's birth defects were genetic. The case lasted about three weeks and was lead by Judge Rudy Nichols, and the jury of eight people took three days to come to the decision of this case that was filed in May 2006.

Although Beaumont officials said they will appeal the award, Halperin no longer works at the hospital according to spokesman Robert Ortlieb. Fieger explained that the award given was to take care of the cost of caring for Markell around-the-clock up to 2077 and her lost wages. This money will be stored with a conservator appointed by the court.

In the original complaint, filed by attorney Douglas Raymond of Lafayette, Colo., Halperin and Beaumont were accused of not realizing that Markell's size warranted a C-section and failing to prevent injury to the baby.

It is evident that Gestational Diabetes can cause problems not only to an expectant mother but to the child also. For this reason, in case you think you have it, don't wait! You should consult your doctor or health care professional immediately, and always remember that Gestational Diabetes poses a number of serious side effects other than the disease itself.
